To develop, finance, and compassionately administer programs to provide healthcare and other social services to Hoosiers in need in order to enable them to achieve healthy, self-sufficient and productive lives.

The Division of Family Resources (DFR) is responsible for establishing eligibility for Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP - food assistance) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF - cash assistance) benefits.

The division also manages the timely and accurate delivery of SNAP and TANF benefits. Additionally, DFR provides employment and training services to some SNAP and TANF recipients. The division’s overarching focus is the support and preservation of families by emphasizing self-sufficiency and personal responsibility.
Program Description
The Division of Family Resources manages the following services:

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) provides financial assistance to low-income families with a child under the age of 18 years of age who is deprived of parental support of one or more parents.

SNAP (formerly the Food Stamp program) is designed to raise the nutritional level of low income households by increasing available food purchasing dollars with supplemental assistance.

The Indiana Manpower & Comprehensive Training (IMPACT) service provides to TANF and Food Stamp recipients job-related services to help them become economically self-sufficient.
Public assistance programs have various financial limits, dependent upon the type of assistance that is applied for; most use some level of the Federal Poverty Index for eligibility.
