The Spina Bifida Association (SBA) serves adults and children who live with the challenges of Spina Bifida. Since 1973, SBA has been the only national voluntary health agency solely dedicated to enhancing the lives of those with Spina Bifida and those whose lives are touched by this challenging birth defect. Its tools are education, advocacy, research, and service.
Program Description
SBA’s mission is two-folded. In addition to enhancing the lives of those affected by Spina Bifida, the organization also strives to reach all women of childbearing age with its prevention messages. All SBA programs and services are created and developed based on industry innovation and research with our audiences.
  • National Resource Center:  The National Resource Center on Spina Bifida (NRC) provides high quality, confidential information and referral services.
  • Quality of Life:  Lives are changed by the information and referral SBA provides to new parents of babies who are born with Spina Bifida, families who are dealing with the challenges of Spina Bifida, teens who are transitioning toward newfound independence, and adults who are leading productive and fulfilling lives.
  • Prevention:  SBA works with health care professionals to ensure that important prevention information reaches the 65 million women of childbearing age in the United States.
  • Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida: this family-friendly, non-competitive one mile walk and educational resource fair raises awareness about Spina Bifida and celebrates the accomplishments of the approximately 177,000 Americans living with its challenges. Walk-N-Roll is open to the public and free of charge, though fundraising for our mission is encouraged. Proceeds are used to support local community programs and services for all affected by Spina Bifida.
  • Education Days: Held every other year, these day-long learning experiences are designed to deliver vital and affordable education from experts in the field to a greater number of people in the Spina Bifida community.
