Mission

The Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services (BDDS) is a part of the Division of Disability, Aging, and Rehabilitative Services within the Family and Social Services Administration.

BDDS administers funding for services for individuals with developmental disabilities in order for them to maximize their capabilities and to actively participate in the community.

BDDS staff work with individuals to access residential services and other needed supports based upon a person centered planning process that considers the individual's goals and choices.

Using a person centered planning process, BDDS staff work with the individual and others as a team to determine the services needed and who should provide those services.

Program Description

The Bureau of Developmental Disabilities (BDDS) plans, develops, and administers a variety of services for people who have developmental disabilities. Services available for persons with developmental disabilities are community based, residential alternatives to placement in state institutions and health facilities.

Programs support independent living in the least restrictive setting possible and are based on a Person Centered Planning process. The Person Centered Planning Process focuses on the service needs as well as the personal choices of the individual with developmental disabilities. The individual, guardian, family, advocates, friends, BDDS field staff and other professionals work as a team to develop and implement a Lifestyle and Support Plan.

Eligibility Criteria: Persons of all ages with developmental disabilities are eligible, including very young children.

Financial
Funding for the services is largely from public funds, including State and Federal appropriations. Individuals may be expected to put a portion of their income and benefits toward the costs of their services.
