Training Descriptions

The goal of About Special Kids’ Training Department is to reach out to parents and professionals to inform and educate them, and to serve as a system of support and reference. We strive to provide each parent and professional with a positive training experience that will provide them with the tools necessary to navigate through the Special Education and Health Insurance systems.

Roadmap to Special Education: Laws and Process

($40 - Family Member / $75 - Professionals)

Overview: This workshop, combining the Article 7 and IEP training, is all day training that offers basic information about special education laws and regulations for Indiana children ages 3-21. It also introduces recent changes in federal law that will impact Indiana's state regulations. In addition, this training will provide information on how to prepare for a case conference and write an IEP. This training is a great opportunity for family members and professionals who advocate for children with a disability or serious chronic illness.

Public Health Insurance: What You Don't Know Can Cost You

($40 - Family Member / $75 - Professionals)

Overview: This full day training provides parents and professionals with information about public health insurance programs that can be accessed by families caring for children with special needs. It includes information on Medicaid, Medicaid Disability, Medicaid Waivers, Children's Special Healthcare Services, Hoosier Healthwise and SSI (Supplemental Security Income). ASK is pleased to be able to offer this training throughout the state of Indiana.

What Every Parent Wants You to Know - Group Rate for Professionals

($70 Group Rate for Professionals)

Overview: This one hour session is geared towards an audience of teachers, professionals and child care providers. The premise of the class is to allow attendees a unique opportunity to gain insight into the daily lives, routines, and history of a family living with a child with special needs. The goal of the course is to allow the participants to understand the parents' and child's perspectives and to use this insight to address accommodations the child will need to be successful in a variety of settings.

Online Trainings

Article 7 Module: Transition

(available in English and Spanish)

This training reviews Rules 43-1 thru 43-7 under Indiana's Special Education Law which pertain to transition. Under Indiana law transition is defined twice, once when a child moves from Early Intervention to Preschool and then again when the child turns 14. Both of these transitions are covered under this video.

Article 7 Module: Discipline Procedures

(available in English and Spanish)

This training reviews Rules 44-1 thru 44-10 under Indiana's Special Education Law which pertain to discipline procedures.

Article 7 Module: Non-Public Schools

(available in English and Spanish)

This training reviews Rules 34-1 thru 34-10 under Indiana's Special Education Law which pertain to students attending a non-public school.

Article 7 Module: Procedural Safeguards

(available in English and Spanish)

This training reviews Rules 37 under Indiana's Special Education Law which pertains to Procedural Safeguards and parental rights.

Family to Family Training

About Special Kids partners with The Early Childhood Center, Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, Indiana University for the Family to Family project. Family to Family offers parent to parent support, a Yahoo listserv, funds for families to attend trainings, and a family training series.
