In a safe and nurturing environment A Rosie Place provides a haven for medically fragile children while giving family members and caregivers periods of relief from the demands of 24-hour care.
Program Description
“A Rosie Place”, is an innovative solution to a rapidly growing challenge for families and our society – the unprecedented surge in the number of medically fragile children able to survive and aspire to an enhanced quality of life.

O’Hana Heritage Foundation Inc.(O’Hana) was incorporated in Indiana in 2003 as an organization with 501(c) (3) status, whose mission is to empower families of medically fragile children. As a result of technological advances in medicine, children with previously fatal illnesses and injuries survive and live in medically fragile conditions that create unique challenges on the survival of their families.

St. Joseph County and its six surrounding counties currently have over 2000 families with a medically fragile child in their home. Such families have an increased incidence of divorce, unemployment and financial hardship, caregiver depression, sibling truancy, sibling isolation and neglect.

O’Hana Heritage Foundation, Inc. embarked on a journey to increase awareness of the needs of this special population, their impact on the health and wealth of our community and to provide needed support that keeps these families intact, by relieving caregivers of some of the burden of care while decreasing the cost of care and reducing the need for inappropriate hospitalization of the medically fragile child.

Through the generosity and support of our community, A Rosie Place was built, in South Bend in 2010. A Rosie Place is now licensed as a specialty care hospital, by Indiana State Department of Health and hopes to obtain state funding for service lines that will be provided to children who are eligible. The home was built to provide skilled nursing in a safe and nurturing environment for these special children while giving their families short periods of relief and rejuvenation from the demands of twenty-four hour care.

Designed to optimize the function of medically fragile children in a welcoming space, and for networking and continued education of parents and healthcare providers, A Rosie Place is set to offer innovative solutions to the needs of these families in an ever changing healthcare marketplace.

A Rosie Place and O’Hana Heritage Foundation Inc. offer an alternative place to provide required services at cost savings to our state both in the short and the long term. We continue to make significant strides with those who have begun to recognize the urgency in addressing the needs of this population. This new initiative and innovative approach to addressing the issues is a substantial contribution being made both locally and nationally.

A Rosie Place is intended to be a model of successful community innovation in healthcare for others to replicate.
